Stanley Park Tennis Club (SPTC) for 2011
Stanley Park Tennis Club is active from Tuesday, May 3 to Friday, September 2, Tuesday and Fridays, from 5:30 till dark. We play on courts 15, 16, 17, at the back by the Fish House restaurant, and at Lost Lagoon for two weeks during the Stanley Park Open Tennis Tournament. The club usually rents a fourth court on Tuesdays. Courtside barbecues are scheduled once a month on the following dates: May 20, June 21, July 26 and August 23. Rained out barbecue nights will be rescheduled, usually for the following week.
Membership: SPTC members are generally adult intermediate players who enjoy playing doubles and mixed doubles. The annual membership fee is $60/year for adults, $45/year for seniors, and $35/year for juniors. If member turn-out allows, non-members can pay a drop-in fee of $5.00 for the night. Should a drop-in player decide to join, the drop-in fee paid will be deducted from the membership fee.
Benefits of SPTC Membership:
- No need to phone anyone to find a tennis partner, just get yourself down to Stanley Park on a Tuesday or Friday evening. Doubles tennis partners are chosen by drawing a playing card. Play sessions last a half hour, after which partners are changed, or people sit out to allow others to have their turn. Conversation courtside can be stimulating. This is, after all, Vancouver’s West End – the koolest, most urbane, corner of the burg. Overhead we have a heronry, nesting crows, eagles coming to dine, wild critters marauding. Not a dull moment to be had. Read about our herons here. Look at ‘em close up here.
- Tennis balls provided. Please note that cans of new tennis balls will be opened on Tuesday, and the balls re-used on Friday. Please leave the balls on court after each half hour change-over. At the end of Tuesday evening, turn them in to any club executive member.
- Courts 15, 16, and 17 reserved for club use. The club rents an extra, one of the pay courts, on Tuesdays.
- Great way to meet people to play with at other times. SPTC members have varying levels of racquet skill, and you will be certain to meet people with whom you can enjoy playing on other days.
- Once a month we have a courtside barbeque, oh so urbanely termed “Loonie Twoonie Tuesday Barbecue Night”, with food, drinks and prizes. Members are invited to chip in $2.00 to help bankroll the draw prizes (usually cash). Participation optional. The club has a storage room with refrigerator and sink, beneath the Fish House. Food left over from Loonie Twoonie Tuesdays can be kept, and supplies spontaneous barbecues as circumstances allow.
- Season closing tennis tournament in September, along with a season wrap dinner party with booze (not too much!) and prizes.
- Tennis BC Membership, including a subscription to their quarterly magazine, Axis, all for the modest price of SPTC membership.
